Spoiler Discussion: The Second Honeymoon

Let me just start by saying, I really loved this book! It wasn’t your typical thriller with one big “ah-hah” shocking moment, but the story itself was thrilling enough to keep me hooked.

We begin with Andre and Becca Gifford. Andre works in branding, while Becca—previously a kindergarten teacher—has been at home due to fibromyalgia. Out of nowhere, Andre surprises her with a cruise to celebrate their 10-year anniversary, even buying her a new complete outfit for the trip. Becca is over the moon, excitedly telling her best friend Stella before they set sail. On board, they meet Olive, a 91-year-old powerhouse of a woman who documents everything on Instagram. Olive immediately became a favorite character for me—smart, bold, and full of life.

But here’s where things unravel. Andre has been plotting to kill Becca, and during their first night on the ship he drugs her champagne and throws her overboard. From there, he seamlessly brings in his mistress, Lily, disguising her as Becca to reboard the ship. Meanwhile, Becca survives—rescued by a kind fisherman named Javi and his ex-nurse friend. Though she has no memory at first, she slowly remembers what happened and begins plotting her revenge, all while falling in love with Javi.

Two years later, Becca is ready. She and Javi set up an anonymous trail of evidence—tipping off the police, a reporter, Stella, and even Olive. In court, Andre faces the consequences of his narcissism, with Lily flipping on him after learning she was just one of many mistresses. His arrogance is unmatched, even dismissing Lily’s betrayal with the line, â€śPeople fall and slip off mountains all the time.”

The final twists made this book unforgettable. Olive didn’t die after all, and Andre finally learns—two years into his prison sentence—that Becca is still alive. His reaction? The perfect final line: â€śThat bitch is still alive.”

Becca’s patience and strength in orchestrating her revenge was so satisfying (YES girl!). And her reunion with Stella at the end gave the story the perfect heartwarming close.

This was an easy 4.7-star read for me—absolutely one of the best books I’ve read this year.
