Do Not Disturb – Freida McFadden

Snowstorm. Blood on her hands. A cop knocking at the door. Just another normal Tuesday for Quinn, apparently. Do Not Disturb opens like it’s daring you to blink. Before you can even grab a snack, we’re knee-deep in panic cleaner fumes while Quinn frantically scrubs blood off her hands and pretends she’s totally fine when the police stop by. Because who hasn’t had to stall a cop while hiding a body?

Once she hits the road, the blizzard basically says, “Not so fast, sweetheart.” She’s forced to stop at a creepy, rundown motel that’s seen better centuries — the sign’s falling apart, the restaurant’s boarded up, and of course, there’s a mysterious woman watching from the upstairs window. Perfect place to decompress after committing a possible homicide.

The setup is peak Freida McFadden: locked-room tension, a storm keeping everyone trapped, and just enough suspense to keep your heart rate hovering between “mild anxiety” and “did I just hear something behind me?” The pacing is quick and the atmosphere deliciously eerie — it’s one of those reads you swear you’ll stop after one more chapter, and then suddenly it’s 2 a.m. and your coffee’s cold.

And then… the twist. Oh, the twist. An angry, psychopathic mistress — who’s also the sister. Because why not double down on the chaos? The big reveal lands with more of a “huh” than a “holy crap,” though. The “unsolved murder” at the motel? Turns out it’s just a long-term guest who’s creepy but harmless. Missed opportunity, honestly. Imagine how satisfying it would’ve been if the motel owner was secretly connected to the crime all along. Predictable? Sure. But at least my jaw would’ve dropped for a reason.

Still, Freida McFadden delivers what she’s known for — fast pacing, solid tension, and enough snowstorm dread to make you glad you stayed home. It’s a fun read, just not one that left me gasping at the end.

My Rating: ⭐ 3.5/5
