The Second Honeymoon – McGarvey Black

Let me just start by saying: I loved this book. Not “oh, that was fine” loved — I mean “I stayed up too late and ignored my responsibilities” loved. The Second Honeymoon isn’t your typical one-big-twist thriller. Instead, it’s a perfectly crafted slow simmer of betrayal, survival, and deeply satisfying revenge.
We meet Becca and Andre Gifford, celebrating their ten-year anniversary with a dream cruise. Becca’s thrilled — new clothes, ocean views, romantic getaway — what could go wrong? (Spoiler: everything.) Andre, who works in branding but clearly missed the branding memo on “Don’t be evil,” has a different plan. Meanwhile, Becca’s living her best life — chatting with her hilarious 91-year-old new friend Olive, documenting her trip, and blissfully unaware that her husband’s idea of “renewing vows” involves a champagne glass and a murder plot.

The setup is deceptively charming until Andre literally throws Becca overboard on their first night. Smooth, right? He drugs her drink, dumps her into the ocean, and then reboards the ship with his mistress Lily disguised as Becca. Truly, the man’s audacity is Olympic-level. But fate has other plans: Becca survives. She’s rescued by a fisherman named Javi and his nurse friend, and while she’s suffering from amnesia at first, her memories start coming back — along with her taste for revenge.
Fast-forward two years, and Becca’s transformation is complete. With Javi by her side (honestly, a better man in every conceivable way), she begins laying out a meticulous plan to expose Andre. Anonymous tips. Evidence trails. Strategic leaks to the press. It’s deliciously methodical. When Andre finally faces justice in court, he’s still smug enough to say things like, “People fall off mountains all the time.” Sure, Andre. Totally normal thing to say in a murder trial.

Then comes the finale — darkly satisfying and cinematic. Lily turns on him. Olive’s not dead (because of course our queen survived). And the cherry on top? Andre learns two years into his prison sentence that Becca is still alive. His last line: “That bitch is still alive.” Honestly, I cheered. Out loud.
Becca’s patience, resilience, and ice-cold revenge make her one of the most gratifying thriller heroines I’ve read this year. And that final reunion with her best friend Stella? The perfect emotional bow to balance the chaos.
Final Thoughts:
Smart, layered, and wildly satisfying, The Second Honeymoon proves you don’t need a dozen twists when your story’s this well-constructed. It’s more than a revenge tale — it’s a triumph of survival, friendship, and poetic justice.
My Rating: ⭐ 4.7/5
